Poetry & Art: Aged Under 9

“I Love Dogs” by Katherine, aged 7, from Canada

I love dogs.
They don’t just sit around like logs.
They are very loyal.
Some are even royal.
Do you have a dog?
You better have a dog if right now you only have a log.

“Some Pets Are Wonderful” by Evelyn, aged 8, from United Kingdom

Some pets are wonderful,
Some pets are beautiful,
Some pets keep you company,
Some pets are super fluffy!

Would you like a tarantula?
It‘s a big, hairy spider,
It’s actually venomous,
But it only poisons its food.

Would you like a dog?
It’s very loyal and friendly.
It loves when you play with it,
But certainly doesn’t like it when it isn’t noticed by you.

Would you like a snake?
It’s a little slimy,
It eats mice and rats,
But it isn’t very scary.

What pet do you want?
Which do you think is the best?

“My Cutest Pet Beauty” by Kuhu, aged 8, from India

My pet is so cute,
I have been begging mom,
To get for years
Now I have finally got it

I am so excited
for all the amazing things
I will get to do

Unlike
This was real life
I know that this would have been a disaster

All the horrible poppy things
The chores i would have to do for it

Dad stepped in
And we have divided our chores

So it is going to be lot of fun
Playing fetch on the loop
Buying toys and treats
The excitement is at another level

Going to the groomers all day long
Seeing Beauty enjoy
And be a pretty lady by the evening

Taking appointments for vaccination
Like a big sister would do it all

Oh! how fun is it to have a pet...

But

my mother says get off of me
As Beauty jumps on my Mom
Mom squeaks
And
Then then she goes away
hoosh, woosh hoosh.

“I Jump Out of Bed” by Isabelle, aged 7, from Austria

I jump out of bed
go to my friend
play with her cats
go back home
play with my dog.
I go to the park
with my cuddly dog.

“The Amazing Lazy Cat” by Chloe, aged 8, from Indonesia

The amazing, lazy cat
That loves to sleep on the mat
And also plays on the soft, white carpet
He hates going to the busy market

He loves sleeping for a day
I don’t know why he hates May
In May, he catches small, white rabbits
He has thousands of bad habits

“Pets” by Aarav, aged 8, from India

I sit and wonder,
Why I don’t have a pet?!
Cause that makes,
my life really sad.

It might be a dog,
or it might be a cat.
I just want one,
cute, not bad.

It can be a bird,
like a parrot,
which will squark all day.
And all the time, we will play.

A dog is caring,
a cat is clever.
They all are charming,
and I will leave them never.

I sit and wonder,
Why I don’t have a pet?!
Cause that makes,
my life really sad.
Cause that makes,
my life really sad.

“The Worst Pet Yet” by Elena, aged 8, from United States

A wolf is a pet,
A pet you could get.
From long ago,
Humans and wolves met.

A wolf cannot go to the vet,
Or play the clarinet.
They might scare you,
Or make you sweat,
And may be a threat.
If you want to take them to Tibet,
You will regret
Because they will bark on the jet.
If you play the cornet,
They might want to duet.
They might make you upset
Or lick you and make you very, very wet.

Wolves are pets
You’ll never forget.
But when they turn into huskies,
Everyone will bet,
It’s the best pet yet.

“Pet Pal-laval” by Molly, aged 9, from United Kingdom

Pets are amazing
but they can sometimes leave you gazing.
About things you'd never thought they'd do;

At night, your cat comes in and cuddles you
but in your garden the next day,
you find a poo!

Dogs are so smart,
so you'd never think they'd fart
but apparently they do it 15-20 times a day!!!

“Pets Are The Best” by Achyut, aged 9, from United States

“Panda Peekaboo” by Evie, aged 10, from United Kingdom

I woke up early in the morning,
Decided to do some drawing,
"What should I draw what should I draw."
A beautiful panda to roar and roar,
I go to get some snacks to eat,
I come back in I see furry feet,
"Who are you? Who are you?" I say very scared.
He just said hi like he cared
"Don't be scared! Don't be scared!"
I didn't speak I just stared,
"Can I have a snack if not I'll go back,
Oh please can you share?"
"Yes only if you give me some care,
But you can only have one,"
"Thanks I'll be quick for I have to run,"
He finished his snack very quick,
"This is nice" he said as he took a lick,
"Thank you, thank you very much"
"Kick the ball," I said as he took a touch,
"Bye! Goodbye," he said as he walked away,
Well I was alone again with no friends.

“Unique” by Jordan, aged 9, from United States

I saw a red frog,
sitting on a log.
Aren't all frogs green, I asked?
Frogs are like a rainbow.
They come in many colors.
Frogs are like people.
They come in many shapes and sizes.
Frogs are like flowers.
They are all beautiful!

“Longing For A Pet” by Jeyan, aged 10, from India

From the time I was three,
All I wanted was a pet,
If I got one, I would be filled with glee,
Like a fish that escaped its net.

A dog, a cat even a bird would suffice,
If the animal is tame, it would be nice.

I would take care of it and feed it,
And do all its chores,
I won’t forget and sit,
I will do all of them and more.

A fish would be boring,
I don’t want that,
A cat would scratch and wreck the flooring,
And don’t even talk about the doormat.

A dog would be perfect, it’s not that hairy,
A corgi is the one I want,
Getting one would make me merry,
To everyone my pet I will flaunt.

“Kitty Cat” by Bennett, aged 10, from United States

Tortie, Tabby, Kitty Catty, I WANT A KITTY CAT!
Persian, Shorthair, what breed don’t care,
I WANT A KITTY CAT!
Doggy no, kitty yes! I want any kind of cat!
Make it friendly! Make it needy!
I GOT A KITTY CAT!

“Leo Is Amazing” by Nora, aged 11, from United States

Leo is amazing,
but annoying along the way,
he's scared by so much, but
cute is an understatement to say.

While he might have a lion's ruff,
a mane of confidence and pride,
its only fluffy fur,
with a kitten on the inside.

I love this kitty with passion,
and love his sister too,
but sometimes I feel upset,
when he puts his toys in his sister's food.

“Why Do We Need Pets?” by Amogh, aged 12, from United States

Why do we need them?

Do we need them because
We need a friend?

Maybe, we need someone
To listen to us.

Or perhaps, we just
Want company.

Or maybe, we need them to
give us happiness and love.

They are the perfect
beings to give love.

Pets!

“Pets” by Yashvi, aged 11, from India

There are so many pets that I would want,
like a feathery friend or a jumping frog.
The problem is I can never choose to have one,
because each one of them seem a lot of fun!

Supposedly a fish,
swims and wiggles in a huge aquarium,
pleads for food every morning and night,
and speaks blibbity- blabbity- blobbity-boo!

Perhaps a dog or puppy,
like a Beagle, Pomeranian, Retriever or Pug,
cheerfully wags its tail to and fro,
And sniffles your feet like a hungry mouse.

Possibly a cunning cat,
with clever tricks up its sleeves,
with a pair perky ears,
and adorably tiny paws which could give you the deepest scratches

Or maybe a hamster,
who runs on a wheel in its little space,
nibbles its food without any greed,
and has fur as white as a dandelion.

So many pets with so many traits,
they climb, crawl, jump and swim.
Our wonderful, long- lasting companions,
with a wonderful, long- lasting bond.

“I Desperately Need A Pet” by Kashika, aged 12, from Belgium

I desperately need a pet,
The one doesn´t need to go to the vet,
Or maybe that's not possible,
Maybe even impossible.

A dog makes a good pair,
But it sheds a lot of hair,
My friend has one,
Her dog is so fun.

Or perhaps a cat,
It would catch a rat,
It is also very cute,
But don´t talk about my mom´s dispute.

A rabbit must be fine,
Its fur must shine,
But it dines,
All the clothes on the clothesline!

A hamster must be the perfect pet,
It makes everything set,
But it is very active in the night,
Which doesn't let me sleep tight.

All these pets are nice and cute,
But looking at some makes me put them on mute,
But not one of them fits me
There is nothing special about them I see.

Oh yeah my little brother!
He can give you quite a blister,
He acts like a monkey, wolf, squirrel and a cat
And even like a little brat.

That's all the animals in one,
He even plays under the sun,
Guess what, he doesn't even need to go to a vet,
He seems like the very perfect pet!

“Paws, My Puppy” by Madeline, aged 14, from United States

Paws, my puppy, hasn’t played in rain quite yet.
Even though it’s muddy, messy, wet,
Together, I just know we’ll have the best of times -- so I will let
Sweet Paws pounce in puddles -- and I won’t have a single regret!

“A Walk With Mumma” by Sanaskriti, aged 15, from India

My Mumma is very sweet, well most of the time
She takes me for walks in the early daytime
There are days she decides to not take me out
I am not sure why as I will noisily pant and pout

Yippee! She is getting ready; I know we are going today
I see her grab my collar, leash and my shirt striped grey
Geez, I tell her I am tired of having to wear that collar
But she tells me I look handsome, it matches my shirt color

I am getting irritated, panting as she takes a few trips upstairs
I ask what she is doing, as I bark at the bottom of the stairs
Yahoo, here we go, walking with my head up proudly smiling
As I walk, my tail is wagging as my Mumma is guiding

I stop and sniff, what a delight as I walk on the ground
Sniffing at new places to explore with wild scents around
Mumma pulls me back again, she can be such a bore!
She waits as I run, catching butterflies one or more

Yes! We are headed towards that park
I pull more and whimper, I can’t wait to leave my mark
I am so happy, my tail wags as I bark and croon
Oh no, we are home again, our walks always end too soon!
